CARL BLARX & BONOBO

Had an amazing time in the studio yesterday with Carl Blarx and Kunfucius of Hyper Sound talking about their upcoming music projects and collabs (the full interview is available on mixcloud here). Afterwards we were really lucky to get to see Bonobo courtesy of Leeds Student Radio, thank you so much!
Like Beefy Squarms, The Hyper Sound Collective is based between Leeds and North West London. It was great to record stuff with old school friends who have gone on to create such amazing stuff!
This was the first time that we had a live performance on Neck Dancing Society and really, the boys blew us away. Kunfucius was live-mixing on the decks as Carl was performing, and our friend Isaac from Platform Radio came on with us to represent LSR, and he surprised us with a bunch of sick bars too - this was one of the most amazing things we've done on the radio show!
When Blarx tells a story I feel as though I slip in and my mind races through different ways I want to animate it, track 2 is a great example of this for any insomniac. When Isaac jumps on the mic with a 'go on then' it plasters a massive grin on my face, because no one in the studio expected him to drop those bars!
Track 4 I think is perhaps my favourite from the studio session, because it was just so brilliant. Kunfucius' dreamy guitar trills melt into your ears, alongside the feel-good vibes of the studio, I have a soft spot for scratching as well so his live mixing in this one I think is, jheeeze. Isaac and Blarx first met in the studio, so it felt sick to have brought together these two artists who meshed off of each other really well. Finally, I can't ignore how gassed I got during the last song when man drops 'Harsh Reality' - these guys brought such a party to the studio, don't forget to catch up on the ep.
Listening back to the interview was great because when we were recording, Caleb and I were unable to hear the backing tracks when the mic's were on, so what we witnessed was this amazing a cappella performance in the intimate Studio 2 of Leeds Student Radio, haha. It was mesmerising, thank you and big up!
That night, we also went to see Bonobo, and I must admit it was one of the best shows I have seen in a long time. As a musician I found the way they played off of each other and moved as a unit truly inspirational, but not only that their visuals were fucking sick!
It was definitely the busiest place I have been in a long time, and it was great to see so many friendly faces in the crowd - a perfect mid week skank to shake the blues away.
Top highlights include Kong and Pieces, which we will play on the radio show this Saturday - Szjerdene, your voice is like the smoothest golden syrup I wish I could bathe in forever, ahh take me back!
s/o @aniapanya for the sick pic, thank you!
