Adam Castle

Yesterday I spoke to one of my longest friends, Adam Castle, who had some excellent news to give me! He is doing amazing stuff with art in Edinburgh (and all over the world for that matter).

Someone To Drive You Home by The Long Blondes, is hands down one of my favourite albums I think, and for me and Adam, it is pretty symbolic of our friendship.

It came out in 2006, and later that year I had my first day of secondary school at Acland Burghley where I met Adam and Tomoki. I remember sitting in front of or behind Adam in registration and we got into the habit of talking about music, we were part of the NME crew, back when you had to pay for it - and the indie music scene was thriving. There was something really liberating about turning 11 and it makes me laugh to think about it now because although I felt so grown up, I was probably not quite 5’’ yet. Every Saturday a little crew of us would walk to Virgin Megastores in Camden, buy an album each and probably share a bag of greasy sugary donuts. Later that evening we’d put the albums on our iPod shuffle or nano, then swap albums at school on Monday so we could all have a listen.

This album was possibly the first I lent to Adam, and still to this day we love it. I’ll be honest, to some extent I would say Kate Jackson and the awesome band taught us about life, about love and men and relationships. Just writing this now has made me realise I’ve been listening to this album for 10 years! Blimey. It’s so interesting though, to remember my relationships with the songs over the times, understanding them more as I grew up.

It’s very hard for me to pick just one song from this album, but I feel I always start playing it with You Could Have Both.
